about

The Outright! trilogy idea was born during the preparation of my first album as a leader in 2008— make three records, one each for alto saxophone, tenor saxophone and soprano saxophone (my main horns at the time), each focusing on the history and monumental figures of the individual instrument.  All were to be mostly original material inspired by these masters’ voices, focus on group interaction and improvisation, feature one reworked standard, have one portion featuring as many musicians as I could fit into the studio and have one piece featuring unfettered guitar shredding, just cause I love it.

A good dozen years later, the original trilogy idea is complete.  Soprano, the most elusive and unfriendly of my three original instruments, proved difficult to tame enough to get an album off the ground, and my interim additions of sopranino, mezzo soprano sax, et al further delayed the conclusion of the trilogy.  One of the few positives of the coronavirus pandemic was more time to focus on soprano and composition and here are the results.  Who knows if there will be future Outright! outcroppings but we are extremely proud of the variety, humor and virtuosity found on Outright! (Innova Recordings, 2008), Unhinged (Irabbagast Records, 2012) and now Recharge the Blade (Irabbagast Records, 2023).  Enjoy!
